Description: The Triple Crown, Thoroughbred Horse Racing's most coveted achievement. And most elusive; there have only been 11 winners of the classic series. The American Thoroughbred Triple Crown consists of 3 races, for 3 year old horses both male and female. The three races are the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course, and the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park. 2013 marked the 35th year there has not been a Triple Crown Winner. The last horse to do so was Affirmed in 1978.
California Chrome (CA) CH , C, foaled February 18, 2011 (Lucky Pulpit - Love the Chase, by Not For Love) became the 140th winner of the Kentucky Derby with a brilliant performance in the 1 1/4 miles $2 million classic race for 3 year olds at historic Churchill Downs May 3, 2014. California Chrome, who is know to have bad gate habits, was expertly handled by rider Victor Espinoza; he got California Chrome away from there alertly. Espinoza had to settle him down as they ran by the stands for the first time, California Chrome wanted to get out there and race with the frontrunners Uncle Sigh and Chitu. He let those two go and the rider got 'Chromie' to settle in behind them. He held his position down the backstretch while angling to the outside. As the field rounded the far turn 'Chromie' came along on the outside to challenge for the lead. Samraat was running well to his outside as well. However, as they hit the 1/4 pole it was all California Chrome drawing off. He won well in hand by 3 lengths, with the rider standing up in the irons with a wave of victory before the finish line. Commanding Curve was closing well on the outside to get up for 2nd. Danza was just a length further back in 3rd.
California Chrome is the first California bred to win the Kentucky Derby since Decidedly won it 1962 and is now just the 4th California bred horse to do it in the 140 year history of the Derby. As fairy tale stories abound in the Kentucky Derby, California Chrome is no exception. He was bred and is owned by first time breeders, Steve Coburn and Perry Martin. They bred a claiming class mare, Love the Chase, by Not For Love, who they bought for $8000. They bred her to Lucky Pulpit for $2500. Their trainer is 77 year old Art Sherman, the oldest trainer to win a Kentucky Derby. California Chrome won the Derby on Mr. Coburn's 61st birthday in front of the 2nd largest crowd to witness the running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. California Chrome racing in purple blinkers with green letters 'DAP', which the owners say stands for 'Dumb Ass Partners', this writer doesn't buy that for an instant!
California Chrome raced 7 times as a 2 year old and won 3 races. His MSW May 17, 2013 at HOL, the $100K Graduation Stakes at DMR July 31, and the $200K King Glorious Stakes at HOL December 22. The King Glorious was the start of something big for the "Partners". California Chrome then went on to win the $250K California Cup Derby at SA on January 25, 2014, his first race as a 3 year old. Then he steps up into Graded company with a victory in the G2 San Felipe Stakes at SA on March 8th. He follows that with a victory in the $1 million Santa Anita Derby. He just doesn't win these races, he runs off and hides as much the best. On May 3, 2014 he exhibits to same domination over his peers and regular rider Victor Espinoza gives him a beautiful ride, they actually win for fun, the rider standing up in the stirrups before the finish line.
California Chrome just won the 139th running of the Preakness Stakes run at Pimlico Race Course, May 17, 2014. The grounds crew is alread atop the infield Cupola painting the weather vane the colors of the owners, Steve Coburn and Perry Martin. California Chrome date with destiny is June 7, 2014 when he attempts to become just the 12th horse history to win. Congratulations Everyone!
