Description: Tapiture (KY) CH , C, foaled May 3, 2011 (Tapit - Free Spin, by Olympio) captured the 1 1/8 miles $750K Grade II West Virgina Derby August 2, 2014 at Mountaineer Race Track. Jockey Rosie Napravnik tracked the pacesetters, Vicar's In Trouble and For Goodness Sake, traveling in the second flight around the first turn. Candy Boy was racing along the outside around that far turn but was always on even terms with Tapiture to his inside. As they raced down the back stretch and into the far turn Tapiture found the rail and Candy Boy was still running along the outside. Vicar's In Trouble came out of the turn gunning for home and Candy Boy had collared him and those two went at it down the stretch. Tapiture was traveling along the inside, he looked to be trying to get inside of Vicar's In Trouble along the inside, then abruptly change course to the outside for clear running. Heading to the 1/16th marker, Candy Boy got the best of Vicar's In Trouble but Tapiture was gaining with every stride. They hit the wire together with Tapiture winning by a nose. Candy Boy was 2 lengths better than Vicar's In Trouble who faded to 3rd. Tapiture had a strong campaign on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, however, he had a rough trip and ended up 15th in the Spring Classic. He came back to win his next start, the Grade III Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs on June 14. His race record is remarkable at 4-2-2 from 10 starts and he joined the millionaire ranks with lifetime earnings of $1,014,060. Tapiture is a homebred of Winchell Thoroughbreds, LLC and he is being trained by Steve Asmussen. Drawing by Daily Racing Funnies ®.
