Description: Keen Ice (KY) B , C, foaled March 25, 2012 (Curlin - Medomak, by Awesome Again) gets his second lifetime victory with a score in the Mid Summers Derby; the 10 furlong $1.6 million Grade I Travers Stakes August 29, 2015 at Saratoga Race Track. Jockey Javier Castellano had only been aboard Keen Ice once before and that was for a workout last week, however, JC was enthusiastic about Keen Ice's chances. Even with Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the race going for his 9th straight win, once again, jockey and horse made a 'connection' and the two teamed up for a most spectacular victory. Zayat Stables American Pharoah did go to the front in the 1 1/4 mile test for the nation's best three year old, however, Godolphin's Frosted went with him and those two kept each other company around the Clubhouse turn and up the back stretch. Keen Ice was running in 5th along side Upstart a couple of lengths off the pace until they raced around the far turn. American Pharoah was headed by Frosted as they turned for home but American Pharoah found more and while visibly spent, he did start to pull away at the furlong marker. However, Keen Ice could be seen eating away at the lead and in deep stretch Keen Ice caught the Champion and went on to win by 3/4 lengths. Frosted stayed on for the show 2 1/4 lengths further back. Keen Ice, while having just won his MSW in his second start September 6, 2014 at Churchill Downs, he did campaign throughout the Derby Trial races, he finished 7th in the Derby, he skipped the Preakness, came back to run 3rd in the Belmont, and then finished 2nd to American Pharoah in the Haskell Stakes earlier this month at Monmouth Park. No one can say Keen Ice was sitting on the sidelines, he was an active participant all season long. He is 2-1-3 from 11 lifetime starts and he has earned $1,490,395.
